La información relacionada con la experiencia de los padres frente al nacimiento de un hijo con discapacidad es poca en la actualidad, este evento inesperado, genera diversas actitudes hacia la discapacidad. Al respecto, se identifican tres etapas consistentes de ajuste para los padres después del nacimiento: shock, reacción y adaptación. Lo anterior es de gran importancia ya que los padres proveen experiencias que pueden influir positivamente en el proceso de aprendizaje del niño tales como el mejoramiento de su autoestima, sus aptitudes y conducta, por lo que el ajuste que ellos tengan ante la discapacidad del hijo influirá en los distintos procesos de éste. El estudio tiene como objetivo identificar la etapa de ajuste que viven los padres. Para ello se elaboró un cuestionario que evaluara el nivel de ajuste a 97 padres con hijos en distintos grados de Educación Especial de la ciudad de Xalapa, los resultados indican una mayor presencia por parte de las madres, mayor incidencia en la etapas de reacción y adaptación, así como relaciones significativas entre el tipo de ajuste de los padres respecto a la discapacidad y edad del hijo.//At present there is a few information regarding the experience of parents in front of the birth of a child with disabilities, this unexpected event, generates different attitudes towards disability.
